How long should a meta description be?
The audit treats 70–160 characters as the good band. Outside it the field warns and keeps half its points — it never fails, because an unusual length does not break anything.
That band is a budget, not a law. Search engines truncate by pixel width, not by character count, so a wide title in capitals is cut sooner than a narrow one of the same length. And the description has never been a ranking factor — it is rewritten by the engine far more often than it is shown. Treat the number as a guardrail against the two real failures: nothing to show, or a sentence cut mid-word.
